The IS-2 mod. 1944 was an improved variant of the renowned IS-2 heavy tank, introducing various mechanical improvements in reliability as well as adding a 12.7 mm DShK HMG in front of the commander's cupola to the vehicle. Compared to earlier IS-2s, more noticeable changes were also made to the vehicle itself: the 120 mm ‘staircase-like’ front of the 1943 models was reworked into a single-piece, 60-degree sloped, 100 mm armoured plate, and the driver's viewport, which was at the centre of the front plate in earlier models, was replaced with a narrower slitted viewport off to the side. These resulted in better frontal protection for the vehicle, but at the expense of the driver’s field of view, even with two added viewports on top of the hull to compensate.
IS-2s of various types saw fierce fighting in Berlin, often on the front lines in the thick of the action, and despite some losses (~60) to weapons such as the Panzerfaust, they helped secure the city. The IS-2 No.321 is the combination of all these steel beasts rolled into one, the IS-2 that has ‘seen it all’, war-torn but unwilling to stop until the war itself ended.
Introduced during Update "Wind of Change" as a reward for the Legend of Victory event, the IS-2 No.321 is a special event version of the IS-2 (1944) heavy tank. They are functionally identical, the primary difference being the lack of mudguards and the lack of ‘cage armour’ as found on the IS-2 (1944) as a module. Equipped with the devastating Soviet 122 mm D-25T cannon, the No.321 can, like its brethren, deliver punishing shots that are all but guaranteed to one-shot an enemy on penetration or through overpressure, but at the expense of a long reload. The roof-mounted 12.7 mm DShK of the No.321 can also be used to ward off both lightly armoured foes and aircraft alike, easily setting planes alight and ripping through thin armour like butter. The IS-2 No.321 is, as such, best suited to being played just behind the front lines, as the large muzzle brake makes the barrel an easy target and the reload is too long to hold off multiple enemies at once. This lets you support your team’s advance, one shell at a time, without the risk of being overrun.
