New layout
(Regarding edit https://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=CDK_Reference/Units&diff=181736&oldid=181412)
This edit does two things different: counts subtrees as their own trees, and categorizes "special vehicles" differently.
The purpose behind having subtrees listed as their own trees is simply for convenience, the Hungarian, South African and Finnish subtrees are all small but they are still at least a full line of vehicles. This is not a critical change and isn't strictly necessary; we can also keep going with only the main trees.
As for the special vehicles, what has changed is the criteria. Now, "special units" are units that are not just hidden, but also not attached to a country tree altogether. This change might be less accurate but is to make maintaining this page easier, as previously I had a hardcoded list of special vehicles. If Colok knows of a more reliable way to identify vehicles that aren't obtainable, that could work too, I personally haven't found any.

- Greetings, thank you for your input. However, we would like to move forward with the vehicles grouped under the nation they are placed into in the game. Special category has been a way to categorize all other units that are not present in the game tech trees, but we can be open to suggestions for renaming it or separating unavailable vehicles from actual "special" CDK units if it would make categorization more easier for us all. --Inceptor57 (talk) 23:38, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah that's the thing, "vehicles that are not present in the game tech tree" is kind of ambiguous. The last edit I pushed only included vehicles that were genuinely not in any tech tree, some of the vehicles that were listed before were definitely special but were in fact listed in the game files as within a tech tree and were just flagged to be hidden - those were excluded in the last edit I made and put in the country tree they're listed in instead. The flag that hides them is also not a reliable indicator, as it's used for all sorts of unobtainable vehicles, including premium ones not currently being sold, or ones that have been removed from research in the tech tree; those are currently in their respective trees, as while currently unobtainable, they are still playable by those who own them.
- Unlike drones and nuclear bomb carriers, I have not found a way to reliably identify vehicles exclusive to events/missions, so I'm not sure how to go forward about maintaining that category. Generally, the event vehicles (April fools ones for instance) get removed from the files after their event as well, so I'm not sure of the context behind the few vehicles that are left.
Links to vehicles
I was looking into putting links pointing to each vehicle's respective pages, but I'm hitting a wall against the ones whose name do not automatically translate into a matching URL (main culprits being the captured and lend-leased vehicles). It seems the Tree Unit template is able to take the vehicles's in-game ID and get the valid URL for them, which would be optimal for this page; however, it is impractical resources-wise to use the template itself here, as there is simply too many vehicles listed on this one page. Does anyone know how that template works, and whether it's possible to reproduce that same behaviour but only get a link as output, and not an image? --Pwa_ (talk) 14:38, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, you could try the Specs-Link template, which does exactly what it sounds like you're looking for (takes an ID and outputs a link to its page). Of course, this won't work for units that don't have pages, which will have to be left unlinked, or linked to a relevant page manually. - DnaGonite (talk) 14:52, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
