General information

The ZUT-37 is a Soviet self-propelled anti-aircraft gun developed at the beginning of World War II. Although some prototypes armed with twin DShK machine guns were tested, production issues prevented them from entering service. In March 1942, B. G. Shpitalny sought to increase demand for his 37 mm gun by mounting it on a tank. He consulted with the Main Armored Directorate (GABTU KA), which approved the creation of a new turret for the T-70 armed with the Sh-37 gun. OKB-15 built a new anti-aircraft tank, designated ZUT-37 ("Tank Anti-Aircraft Mount"), in August 1942, and it underwent trials that autumn.

The results were disappointing. Reloading the 20-round magazine took about five minutes. The gun was unreliable and inaccurate. The sight often went out of alignment, and the firing gases interfered with aiming. The turret rotation speed was inadequate as well, taking 25 seconds to turn 180 degrees. In December, the vehicle was modified to address these issues. Ammunition capacity was increased, the reloading system was improved, elevation angles were expanded, and armor was upgraded. The tank was tested again in January 1943. However, by then, the military had lost interest. The Sh-37 gun had been removed from production, and the vehicle still had numerous problems. Another prototype was built in May 1943, but all work on the vehicle ceased thereafter.

The ZUT-37 was introduced in the Update 1.43. Despite its designation as an anti-aircraft vehicle, it is nearly ineffective against aircraft due to its limited ammunition capacity, lengthy reload time, slow turret traverse, and inadequate armor. However, its 37 mm automatic gun and T-70 chassis make it effective as a self-propelled gun or light tank. The vehicle can handle multiple enemies in succession, and its small size and speed are an advantage. Nevertheless, its shortcomings remain noticeable in this role as well.
