The T-80U (Object 219AS) is an upgraded version of the Soviet T-80 main battle tank. The base T-80's GTD-1000T gas turbine engine had a short service life, high operational costs, and high fuel consumption. In addition to engine issues, the tank’s armor was inadequate and required upgrades. In the early 1980s, solutions were pursued, including installing the more powerful and reliable GTD-1250 engine. However, the fuel consumption problem remained. The tank's armor was reinforced with Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armor (ERA), its gun was replaced, and its fire control system was upgraded to allow for the use of more powerful ammunition. The T-80U was adopted in 1985, but production with the new GTD-1250 engine did not begin until 1990. Today, T-80U tanks are in service in Ukraine, Russia, Cyprus, and South Korea.
The T-80U was introduced as special award for the winners of the YouTube Cup 2019 tournament. Its only difference from the standard T-80U is a unique camouflage. With its combination of high mobility, powerful armament, and extremely strong armor, the T-80U is one of the best tanks in the game. Despite the presence of more modern armored vehicles, the T-80U can fight them on equal terms. Its only drawbacks are its classic Soviet internal layout and limited gun depression angles, which, in certain situations, can make it easier for enemy tanks to hit the vehicle.
