The BMP-2M “Berezhok” is a Russian modification of the BMP-2, developed in the early 2000s by the Instrument Design Bureau. The main difference between the BMP-2M and the standard BMP-2 is the new B05YA01 “Berezhok” turret, which, in addition to the standard 30 mm 2A42 automatic cannon, includes four Kornet ATGM launchers, a 30 mm AG-30 grenade launcher, and a modern fire-control system with a second-generation thermal sight for the gunner and a panoramic sight for the commander. Serial production of the “Berezhok” was deployed at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant; however, until 2017 only Algeria carried out modernisations of the BMP-2 to the BMP-2M standard, after which Russia joined the programme.
Introduced in Update 1.99 “Starfighters”, the BMP-2M performs excellently in combat not only due to good mobility but also thanks to its arsenal of weapons and the new fire-control system with a thermal sight and laser rangefinder. The Kornet ATGM with a tandem warhead can destroy virtually any opponent in a frontal engagement, and for anti-helicopter work the BMP-2M’s loadout includes an ATGM with a proximity fuze. In addition, a special APFSDS ammunition belt is available for the 30 mm high-rate-of-fire 2A42 cannon, increasing the BMP-2M’s chances of defeating enemy main battle tanks in the side projection. However, the BMP-2M has significant drawbacks — thin armour that does not protect the vehicle from top attacks by aircraft and from large-calibre machine guns on the flank, and poor gun elevation angles that complicate fighting on hilly maps. Furthermore, the BMP-2M may be slower than some Western tanks, which makes taking up positions at the start of a battle more difficult.
