Shortly after the M103 entered service in Europe, the U.S. Army began looking for ways to modernize the vehicle or create a replacement based on it. Among the many projects were two tank designs with rotating turrets: the T57 and the T58, which had 120- and 155-millimeter guns, respectively. Both vehicles were based on an improved, heavily armored version of the M103 hull. However, due to their different guns, they had different turret designs, optics, and fire control systems. The T58 had a significantly more advanced recoil system, a different sight, a rangefinder, and an automatic loader for six shells instead of eight.
The T58's 155 mm gun was a modernized version of the T30 tank gun. It was equipped with a drum-type automatic loader and a fume extractor, and the breech became vertical instead of horizontal. The design was created and approved on January 18, 1952, followed by an order on April 10. However, testing of the vehicles was greatly delayed due to long production times and constant changes in requirements. Consequently, the Army lost interest in the old vehicles and wanted something new. On January 17, 1957, work on both tanks was discontinued, and the prototypes were scrapped.
The T58 was introduced in Update 2.49 "Tusk Force". This powerful American tank stands out with its 155mm gun and fast autoloader, which allow it to destroy groups of enemies in seconds. However, once the autoloader is depleted, the first round of ammunition must be reloaded, which takes a long time. Additionally, the tank is large, and three of the four crew members are in the turret, often getting knocked out together.
