In 2009, BAE Systems began upgrading the FV107 Scimitar reconnaissance vehicle for the British Army, applying lessons learned from operations in Afghanistan. As part of the modernization process, the gasoline engine was replaced with a Cummins BTA diesel engine and the manual transmission was replaced with an automatic one. The vehicle also received improved mine and ballistic protection, new crew seats, and an air conditioning system. Additional armor kits and slat armor could be added as needed. The upgraded vehicle was designated the Scimitar Mk.2, and a total of 50 vehicles were converted. They entered service in 2011 and were deployed to Afghanistan in September of that year.
The Scimitar Mk.2 was introduced as a reward for the 2026 "Scimitar Strike" event. This new version of the light tank is equipped with slat armor, which provides a modest increase in protection against early ATGMs and HEAT rounds. However, the vehicle's increased weight to 13 tons reduced its top speed to 80 km/h. This drawback is offset by a more powerful 235 hp engine and a new transmission. The Scimitar Mk.2's main weaknesses are its mediocre protection and the relatively low rate of fire of its 30 mm cannon, which can be disadvantageous in combat.
