HMS Saumarez (G12) was the lead ship of the S-class destroyers of the Royal Navy, named after Admiral James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez. The ship was laid down in January 1941, launched on 20 November 1942, and commissioned on 1 July 1943. The S-class destroyers featured new main battery mounts with 120 mm/45 QF Mk. IX guns, distinguished by their sharply angled shields, allowing for maximum elevation. They also incorporated an early version of the Fuze Keeping Clock fire control computer for calculating shell detonation parameters.
During World War II, HMS Saumarez primarily escorted Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union and took part in the Normandy landings as the lead ship of Force S, providing naval gunfire support for the capture of Ouistreham. In early 1945, she served in the Far East, conducting convoy attacks and carrier group escort duties. Returning to the UK in December 1945, she underwent repairs and later served in the Mediterranean, mostly intercepting ships carrying illegal immigrants. On 22 October 1946, she struck a mine near Corfu, resulting in severe damage and the loss of 30 crew members. The ship was towed first to Corfu, then to Malta, and remained there until 1950. Her remains were eventually scrapped in Rosyth, UK.
HMS Saumarez was added in Update 2.49 “Tusk Force”. She features a modest but effective main battery and a strong AA suite. However, her average speed and near absence of armour reduce her overall survivability.
