The Panavia Tornado ADV F.3 (ADV stands for "Air Defense Variant") was a European interceptor fighter with variable-sweep wing. It was developed by the international consortium Panavia Aircraft GmbH. It made its first flight on November 20, 1985, and entered service with Saudi Arabia, Italy, and the United Kingdom in 1986. It was equipped with the GEC-Marconi Avionics AI Mk 24 Foxhunter multi-mode pulse Doppler radar, which could detect aerial targets up to 185 km away and track over 10 targets simultaneously. The aircraft could be armed with British Aerospace Skyflash missiles, the British counterpart of the American AIM-7 Sparrow, and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. The Tornado F.3 was retired from service with the Royal Air Force in 2010 and was replaced by more advanced multirole fighters, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon.
The Tornado F.3 was introduced in Update 2.25 "Sky Guardians". It is represented in its interceptor configuration, so its suspended armament is intended exclusively for air combat. The AIM-9L Sidewinder is well-suited for close-range engagements at distances of 2–4 km. For medium ranges, there are newer SARH Skyflash Super Temp missiles, which are similar to the AIM-7M Sparrow. Additionally, the Tornado F.3 features advanced radar modes (Doppler and track-while-scan), a large number of countermeasures and advanced avionics. These include a ballistic computer for the 27mm Mauser BK27 cannon, which significantly simplifies aiming. However, a radar lock on the target is required to activate it, and it can fire at a distance of 500–700 meters. Among its drawbacks are its limited maneuverability, which makes dogfighting unfavorable, and its high fuel consumption. To mitigate the latter issue, the aircraft can carry two external fuel tanks, each with a capacity of 1,500 liters.
