The PT-76 is a Soviet amphibious light tank, designed in 1949 with lessons learned from World War II. Soviet planners requested the tank be capable of crossing bodies of water with minimal preparation, to which end the PT-76 came equipped with an innovative waterjet propulsion system that allowed it to reach speeds of up to ~10 km/h in water. A modernised variant of the base PT-76, the PT-76B, was equipped with a two-plane stabilised 76 mm gun, NBC protection system, various minor improvements to many subsystems as well as a stronger engine. The Finnish Army, due to the effects of Finlandization, purchased 12 PT-76s in 1964, specifically the PT-76B variant. The PT-76Bs would go on to serve Finland for 30 years, before finally being withdrawn in 1994.
Introduced in Update "Fire and Ice" as part of the Finnish subtree, the Finnish PT-76 brings a distinctly recognisable set of unique abilities to the Swedish tech tree. The most striking feature is its dual-plane stabiliser at such a low Battle Rating, which allows the PT-76 to fire on the move. On the other hand, its mobility as a light tank is quite poor compared to contemporaries, and it’s unlikely to gain the positional advantage in the early game as a result. The armour of the PT-76 is quite lacking, with even 12.7 mm MG fire being able to punch through various points, so not taking sustained fire is imperative for survival. The PT-76 plays more like a medium tank with a stabiliser and scouting rather than a light tank, and often finds itself playing a more supporting role on the team due to its poor armour, middling mobility and often inconsistent gun, but the vehicle still offers something of value with its stabiliser and shell capable of dealing with more heavily armoured opponents. Utilising the vehicle’s strengths as well as the odd case where the vehicle’s amphibious nature comes into play, making sure to get the first shot on the enemy is vital for success.
