The BMP-2MD is a Finnish modernization of the Soviet BMP-2. By 2016, the vehicles purchased by Finland in 1988 had become significantly outdated. To keep them relevant, the BMP-2s were modified to include new storage boxes that also serve as spaced armor, improved thermal imaging camouflage, and modern thermal imaging optics for the gunner, driver and commander. The vehicles also received new radio stations. Due to these modifications, the vehicle's weight increased from 13.1 to 13.5 tons, and its width increased by 10 centimeters. A total of 100 BMPs were upgraded to the BMP-2MD standard.
The Finnish BMP-2MD was introduced in Update 2.41 "Firebirds" as a part of the Swedish ground research tree. The Finnish vehicle differs from the Soviet BMP-2 primarily with the absence of ATGMs, and instead the BMP-2MD recieved a modern thermal imager and slightly improved armor. Overall, however, it is still the same BMP. Its armor is weak, and its gun can only effectively engage enemy tanks in their weak side armor. In terms of mobility, the BMP-2 is sometimes inferior to even main battle tanks.
