The Mi-24 Superhind is a modernized version of the Mi-24 helicopter developed in South Africa. After successfully completing work on the Rooivalk helicopter, Advanced Technologies and Engineering (ATE) first showed interest in the Mi-24 in 1996. Shortly thereafter, ATE developed a series of upgrade packages designated the Super Hind Mk.II, Mk.III, Mk.IV, and Mk.V.
The program aimed to deeply modernize and re-equip the helicopter for use with modern weaponry, upgrade its navigation systems, and enable all-weather, round-the-clock operation. The first customer was the Algerian Air Force, which signed a contract in 1999 to upgrade 40 Mi-24V units. Between 2003 and 2005, ATE promoted the Super Hind project to new NATO members in Eastern Europe but achieved limited success. The only exception was a contract to supply a single demonstration unit to Bulgaria.
The Superhind was introduced in Update 2.41 "Firebirds". This helicopter's nose stands out due to its 20 mm autocannon with its advanced thermal sight. It allows the helicopter to efficiently detect and destroy lightly armored vehicles. Its weapons arsenal has also expanded to include dumb bombs, unguided rockets, and INGWE missiles with tandem warheads and a range of up to 5 km. However, the helicopter's main drawback is its unsuitability for air-to-air combat due to its lack of air-to-air missiles.
