In 1993, the first prototype of the Su-30MK fighter, a modernized commercial version and an export variant of the Su-30 adapted for air-to-ground weapons, was presented at the IDEX exhibition. This aircraft gave rise to two branches of twin-seat Su-27 derivatives: one with canards produced in Irkutsk and another without canards produced at KnAAPO. In 1998, KnAAPO began developing the Su-30MKK, which was based on the Su-30MK and equipped with a new N001VE radar. Deliveries of the 38 aircraft began in 2000. At China's request, an improved version, the Su-30MK2, featuring anti-ship weapon compatibility and the N001VEP radar, was created in 2002. This aircraft attracted other customers as well, and in 2006, Venezuela signed a contract for 24 units. Initially designated the Su-30MK2V, the aircraft were later renamed the Su-30MK2 AMV (Aviación Militar Venezolana) after Vietnam placed an order. All 24 fighters were delivered within three years and remain in service, though three were lost in non-combat incidents.
The Venezuelan Su-30MK2 AMV was introduced in Update 2.51 "Spearhead", to the USSR aviation research tree. It is a heavy aircraft with a low thrust-to-weight ratio, which makes it poorly suited for prolonged, close-range maneuvering. However, its limited agility is offset by an assortment of effective medium- and short-range air-to-air missiles. Its diverse air-to-ground weaponry allows it to engage stationary and moving targets.
