From 1942 onwards, the S.M.79 began to lose its effectiveness and suffered heavy losses within bomber units. The aircraft was increasingly used in the torpedo bomber role, and the S.M.79 bis/N was introduced into production by early 1943. Instead of some bomb load, an additional 1,430-litre fuel tank was installed inside the fuselage to increase range. Mounts for a single torpedo were fitted under the fuselage, and a backup compass was introduced to allow the use of torpedoes with magnetic detonators. Production of the S.M.79 continued until 1944, with a total of 1,458 aircraft being produced, including variants built under licence in Romania. From 1944 onwards, the Sparviero fought on both sides of the conflict, serving both liberated Italy and Mussolini’s regime, which was supported by German forces. The aircraft completed its combat service in 1945 with the end of the war.
The Italian S.M.79 bis/N has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27 as a part of the German aircraft research tree. In terms of flight performance, armament and bomb load, the aircraft is essentially identical to the S.M.79 AS. It is a versatile aircraft capable of engaging both ground and naval targets. With decent speed and relatively good manoeuvrability for a bomber, it performs well in air, combined and naval battles. While its defensive armament is adequate for repelling inexperienced enemy fighters, numerous blind spots leave the S.M.79 bis/N vulnerable to coordinated attacks by multiple aircraft. Aircraft equipped with cannon armament are especially dangerous as they can destroy the aircraft with a single accurate burst, negating its survivability.
