The S.M.79 Serie 4 Sparviero, a 1937 variant, had modified contours on the dorsal fairing and the gunner-radio operator’s canopy. It also had an fixed loop radio compass antenna and an additional bracing wire installed. Instead of a single 7.7 mm Lewis machine gun mounted in the fuselage that fired sideways through specially cut openings, it had two Breda-SAFAT machine guns. Starting in 1943, the S.M.79 lost its relevance as a bomber and was reclassified as a torpedo bomber. After Italy switched to the Allied side, Sparviero aircraft fought on both sides of the front, for both the Axis and the forces of liberated Italy. The aircraft’s combat service ended in 1945. From 1936 to 1944, a total of 1,458 Sparviero aircraft of all modifications were built, including those produced under license in Romania.
The Italian S.M.79 Serie 4 has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27 as a part of the German aircraft research tree. In terms of flight performance, armament, and bomb load, the aircraft is identical to the S.M.79 Serie 8. It remains a versatile aircraft well-suited for destroying ground targets. However it often faces aircraft equipped with cannons. It cannot outrun these aircraft and cannot withstand their fire. Its defensive armament, which was sufficient for earlier versions, is not powerful enough to effectively counter enemy fighters.
