The de Havilland Sea Venom was a naval variant of the regular Venom, built for the Royal Navy to operate from aircraft carriers. The first units began to enter service in 1951, but it was eventually replaced by the de Havilland Sea Vixen from 1959 onward, with the final units withdrawn in 1970.
France was already building Vampires under licence and, as they needed a new aircraft for naval service, acquired a licence to produce the Sea Venom. This became the first jet-powered aircraft used by the French Navy, under the name Aquilon. The airframe was produced by SNCASE, while the engine was built by Fiat. It entered service in 1953 as the SE-201 Aquilon and was a direct copy of the British Sea Venom. The SE-202 was a more refined version, fitted with an ejection seat. The SE-203 finally gave the Aquilon a radar – the American AN/APQ-65 – providing all-weather capability and the ability to fire air-to-air missiles. The Aquilon was retired in 1967 to make way for the significantly more modern Étendard IVM and F-8E Crusader.
The SE.203 Aquilon 203 was introduced in Update 2.59 "Sky Odyssey". Its main distinguishing feature is its ability to carry air-to-air missiles, allowing it to engage targets at longer ranges. The airframe is the same as that of the British Sea Venom. The powerful engine makes it rather fast in the air, with decent manoeuvrability, but be aware of speed bleed. The four 20 mm cannons will also make quick work of enemy aircraft, and the missiles, even though not very manoeuvrable, can still take down slow and large targets such as bombers.
