The Bell P-39Q-15 Airacobra was an American single-engine fighter used during World War II. The Q series was the final and most produced version of the Airacobra. It incorporated all previous structural and technical improvements aimed at increasing durability and reliability. Additionally, the four rifle-caliber, wing-mounted machine guns of earlier models were replaced with two heavy machine guns. The Q-15 differed from earlier models primarily due to the addition of an automatic propeller governor that adjusted blade pitch according to engine RPM, which simplified aircraft handling, especially in combat.
Between 1943 and the end of production in August 1944, 4,905 P-39Q aircraft were built, 3,291 of which were delivered to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program. In Soviet service, the Airacobra proved particularly effective as a frontline fighter and was used extensively in combat from 1942 until the end of the war. Pilots praised the aircraft’s radio equipment, cockpit visibility, powerful armament, and tricycle landing gear configuration.
The Soviet P-39Q-15 has been in the game since the beginning of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27. The Airacobra is a responsive fighter with well-rounded performance characteristics. Its strengths include good speed, responsive controls, and a respectable climb rate. However, the aircraft loses a significant amount of energy during sustained turns. Its drawbacks include severe engine overheating and poor high-altitude performance. Additionally, the 37 mm cannon has poor ballistics, a low rate of fire, and limited ammunition.
