After observing the development of the British bomber programme during the late 1930s, the de Havilland company, then known for building various wooden high-speed airplanes and airliners, decided to develop their own aircraft based on specification P.13/36 under the project name DH.98. Initially conceptualised as an unarmed fast bomber, de Havilland later modified the design after a suggestion from the British Air Ministry. The resulting aircraft, later known as the de Havilland Mosquito, entered service with the RAF in late 1941. Made almost entirely out of wood, the Mosquito offered a strategic advantage in that it required less metal to construct, therefore saving the material for other aircraft designs. Throughout the war, the Mosquito was used in numerous roles. The sheer versatility as well as the surprisingly good flight characteristics led crews to nickname it the "Wooden Wonder".
The Mosquito FB Mk VI was the special “fighter-bomber” variant of the Mosquito based on the Mk II variant. The Mk VI featured four each of Hispano autocannons and .30 Browning machine guns mounted in the nose as its main armament, as well as bombs. The Mk VI was frequently used in various special raids, such as the raid against the Gestapo HQ, and later spawned a dedicated anti-tank variant.
The Mosquito FB Mk VI has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27. Featuring extremely heavy firepower, the Mosquito is capable of shredding any opposing aircraft into pieces. With the ability to equip bombs and rockets, it can play a part in both the ground and air war. However, being a twin-engine aircraft by design, the Mosquito can still be outmanoeuvred by dedicated fighters, especially while laden with payloads, whilst being extremely vulnerable to fire damage due to its wooden construction. Therefore, Mosquito pilots should not underestimate their enemies and only engage them when opportunity arises.
