The Type 4 model 2 (Karo-Tei) was a series of anti-submarine gunboats built for the Imperial Japanese Army by Yokohama shipyard in 1944. The class was designed to be as simple as possible, in order to be produced in sufficient numbers to counter advancing Allied forces, particularly submarines. The type saw service during the final years of the Pacific War, primarily during the battles of the Philippines and Okinawa.
The Type 4 (mod. 2) was introduced in Update 1.89 "Imperial Fleet". The Karo-Tei presents a significant upgrade in terms of mobility over its predecessor, the extremely sluggish Type 5 Kei-Tei gunboat. While the Karo-Tei is not fast enough to catch up with PT boats, it is still mobile enough to comfortably move and reposition. Its armaments consist of a single 37 mm gun at the bow and a pair of 20 mm guns amidships. Due to the 37 mm gun's relative inaccuracy and lack of damage output, the 20 mm guns are generally more reliable against most targets. However, the Karo-Tei suffers from a shallow draught, resulting in very poor stability in rough seas. In addition, the boat’s hull is very fragile and can be easily damaged.
