The I-15bis is a Soviet pre-war biplane fighter aircraft. Developed by Polikarpov Design Bureau from 1935 to 1937, it was a further development of the I-15 aircraft that eliminated its shortcomings. Plant No. 1 mass-produced it from 1937 to 1939. During this period, an estimated 2,403 to 2,408 I-15bis aircraft were produced. The I-15bis took an active part in combat operations starting in the Spanish Civil War in 1938 and ending with the war with Japan in 1945.
Mitrofan Petrovich Krasnolutsky was a Soviet fighter pilot, a Hero of the Soviet Union, and a major general of aviation since 1955. He participated in the Soviet-Finnish War and the Great Patriotic War. In 1941, he commanded the 1st Squadron of the 65th ShAP. On August 12, 1941, Krasnolutsky led a group of five (according to other sources, seven) aircraft that engaged in combat with four Finnish MS.406C-1s. Krasnolutsky rammed one of the MS.406C-1s with his I-15bis. Both aircraft sustained damage to their wings but were able to return to their airfields.
The Krasnolutsky's I-15bis was introduced in Update 2.25 "Sky Guardians". Its flight characteristics and armament are identical to the standard I-15bis': excellent maneuverability and good offensive armament, but poor survivability and speed. The aircraft also features a distinctive historical camouflage that belonged to the plane of M.P. Krasnolutsky of the 1st Squadron of the 65th ShAP.
