In 1993, the Indonesian Air Force purchased the Hawk 200 from British Aerospace. Designated the Hawk 209, it represented the most advanced variant of the Hawk 200 family, featuring upgraded avionics and radar systems. The aircraft quickly became one of the Air Force’s main light attack platforms, operating alongside the A-4E Skyhawk. The Hawk 209 played a key role during the Indonesian military’s withdrawal from East Timor in 1999, including intercept missions against RAAF aircraft that entered Indonesian airspace during the operation. In 2003, the Hawk 209 was also deployed to provide air cover and escort missions against the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) separatist group. Today, all Hawk 209 units are based at Supadio Air Force Base in Pontianak and Roesmin Nurjadin Air Force Base in Pekanbaru, with plans to relocate them to Soewondo Air Force Base in Medan to accommodate the arrival of the new Rafale F4s by 2027.
The Indonesian Hawk 209 was introduced in Update 2.53 "Line of Contact" to the Japanese tree. It is very similar to the Hawk 200 found in the British tech tree, sharing the same flight performance but with slightly different armament options. Unlike the Hawk 200, the Hawk 209 is equipped with a single 30 mm ADEN Mk.4 cannon, lacks retarded bombs, and has only FFAR “Mighty Mouse” rockets as its rocket armament. It carries AIM-9P-4 missiles instead of AIM-9L, and is armed with AGM-65G missiles rather than AGM-65B. The main similarity in armament between the two variants is the ability to carry the Sea Eagle anti-ship missile, one of the best anti-ship weapons in the game.
