The Fw 190 F-8 Würger (Shrike) was a ground-attack variant of the Fw 190 A-8, a single-engine fighter used by Germany during World War II. It was developed in early 1944. Unlike the standard fighter version, the ground-attack variant had reinforced armor, a powerful FuG 16 ZS radio, and extra bomb racks under the fuselage and wings. From March 1944 until the Third Reich’s surrender in May 1945, at least 3,400 Focke-Wulf aircraft of this variant were produced and used as ground attack aircraft, bombers, torpedo bombers, and fighter bombers.
Starting November 8, 1944, Hungary began receiving Fw 190s to counter Soviet armored vehicles alongside other ground attack units. A total of 72 F-8, F-9, and G variants were delivered between 1944 and 1945. However, in practice, the Hungarians used the Fw 190s to defend against bombing raids by the U.S. and Soviet air forces. The situation was so dire that, in 1945, dedicated ground-attack aircraft, such as the Hs 129 or Ju 87, were also deployed for this role.
The Hungarian Fw 190 F-8 was introduced in Update 2.55 "Ninth Wave" as a part of the Italian aviation research tree. This "Focke-Wulf" stands out from other German single-engine aircraft due to its wide range of suspended armament, making it effective against armored vehicles. However, against aircraft, it boasts only an excellent roll rate, decent armament, and good speed. In terms of maneuverability, it falls short of dedicated fighters and, in terms of external armament, full-fledged ground-attack aircraft. Unlike the German Fw 190 F-8, it lacks the X-4 air-to-air missile.
