The General Dynamics F-16CM PoBIT is the product of the most extensive F-16 modernization program in U.S. Air Force history, carried out by the Post-Block Integration Team (PoBIT). The military had long considered plans to upgrade its F-16 fleet. Minor modifications were made prior to 2010. However, plans to equip the F-16 with AESA radars were delayed through several phases, from the CAPES program (canceled in 2014) to efforts that resumed in 2015 under the RMP and the JEON request for the National Guard. After conducting comparative tests on June 17, 2017, the U.S. Air Force chose the AN/APG-83 radar from Northrop Grumman over Raytheon's competing product. The first AN/APG-83 radars were installed on 82 F-16C Block 30 National Guard Air Force aircraft.

All 608 U.S. Air Force F-16C Block 40/42 and Block 50/52 aircraft are scheduled to receive the radar as part of the PoBIT program, which began in spring 2022. In addition to the radar, the program includes upgrades to the central multifunction display and electronic warfare capabilities, improvements to the communications system, and modernization of the onboard computer with the addition of the Link 16 tactical data link system. Currently, plans are in place to upgrade the entire F-16 fleet to the PoBIT standard.

The F-16CM PoBIT was introduced in Update 2.55 "Ninth Wave". Its main differences from the F-16C Block 50 are its AESA radar and its AIM-120D missiles, which have GPS guidance and a long launch range. Thanks to a new engine and reduced weight, the aircraft's performance characteristics have slightly improved. The avionics suite has expanded to include MAW and new RWR. However, it is worth noting the lack of advanced weapons for mixed combat; the AGM-65 missiles are essentially the only missile available. Otherwise, the F-16CM continues the F-16 lineage as a light and fast fighter.
