F-14D (VF-11)
The F-14D Super Tomcat, which entered service with the US Navy in 1991, was the final and most advanced variant of the Grumman F-14 carrier-based interceptor. The VF-11 "Red Rippers" is one of the oldest squadrons in U.S. naval aviation. Reformed from VF-43 in 1959, it operated the F-14A from 1980 onward. In July 1992, the squadron joined Carrier Air Wing 14 and began transitioning to the F-14D at Naval Air Station Miramar. They became one of the first squadrons to operate the latest Tomcat variant. In February 1994, the "Red Rippers" participated in Operation Southern Watch aboard the USS Carl Vinson, followed by Operation Desert Strike in 1996. VF-11 pilots were also the first to use Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) precision-guided bombs from the F-14 during a deployment to Afghanistan. In 2005, the squadron was redesignated as VFA-11 and transitioned to the F/A-18F Super Hornet, ending the Tomcat era in its history.
The F-14D (VF-11) was introduced in Update 2.59 "Sky Odyssey". The aircraft retains the variable-sweep wing mechanic while combining it with powerful F110 engines, resulting in excellent acceleration. Its upgraded radar features an all-aspect mode. Its primary armament consists of the AIM-54C+ missile for long-range engagements and the AIM-9M for close-range combat. However, the aircraft remains a large target with a significant infrared signature. Therefore, pilots must closely monitor their opponents and avoid exposing the rear to incoming missile attacks.
