The ZBD04A (ZBD04A式步兵战车; industry code WZ502G) is a cornerstone of modern PLAGF heavy composite mechanized brigades and the army's most advanced IFV. As part of the military modernisation programme initiated in the 1990s, the PLAGF, which had only just begun deploying the ZBD86 as its designated IFV in the early 1990s, purchased the 2K23 turret system from Rostec following evaluations of the BMP-3. Dissatisfied with the latter's hull ergonomics, they developed a new turret system and chassis designated ZBD97 (WZ502) between 1997 and 2003. This resulted in the commissioning of the ZBD04 as the new generation PLAGF IFV.
Likely due to subsequent stages of military modernisation calling for revisions to IFV design philosophy, the new IFV adopted a NATO-inspired hull design while retaining the identical turret system from the ZBD04. Upgrades included enhanced protection, mobility, and a state-of-the-art fire control system, leading to the introduction of the ZBD04A, first observed in 2011.
Introduced in Update "Alpha Strike", the ZBD04A provides a much-needed autocannon-equipped IFV for Chinese lineups. Equipped with a superior FCS, impressive mobility for its size, and a diverse array of domestic and licensed ammunition based on the BMP-3, the ZBD04A can be a formidable flanker or a valuable supporting vehicle for advancing allies. Players will not be disappointed by its new capabilities, though it's advisable to seek substantial cover during dire situations due to its considerable size.
