The AFT09 (AFT09型反坦克导弹武器系统; lit. Anti-tank missile weapon system) is one of the dedicated ATGM carriers in service with the PLAGF, alongside platforms equipped with HJ-10 ATGMs. Development of the HJ-9 began after Institute 203 anticipated that the combat capabilities of HJ-73 and earlier variants of the HJ-8 would prove insufficient against new MBTs. Following a directive for a new ATGM capable of countering potential enemy MBTs by the year 2000, an engineering team, building on the expertise gained during the development of the HJ-8, commenced work on the HJ-9 in 1988. The new missile abandoned wire guidance in favour of TV guidance, incorporated a tandem warhead to maximise effectiveness against armoured targets, and featured revised solid fuel rocket engines for increased speed. The missile system was finalised and delivered to the PLAGF in 1999, making its public debut during both the 50th and 60th National Day Parades as the PLAGF's anti-armour spearhead.
Introduced in Update "Drone Age", the AFT09 is a wheeled 4x4 Chinese ATGM carrier from 1999 with up to twelve HJ-9 ATGMs onboard. It employs a shortened version of the WZ551 chassis (WZ550) found on the PTL02 and WMA301. Unlike those vehicles, which featured large assault gun turrets, the AFT09 boasts an unmanned, retractable ATGM launcher capable of deploying four missiles simultaneously. While it shares similarities with the French MEPHISTO, the AFT09 is significantly more lethal: its chassis offers superior forward mobility, and the HJ-9 missiles outperform HOT-2s in virtually every aspect. Thanks to the HJ-9's unmatched penetration, sufficient missile speed, and effective FCS, players can eliminate even groups of heavily armoured adversaries with a single hit each.
