The Douglas A-26 Invader was an American light bomber and attack aircraft used during World War II. It made its first flight on July 10, 1942, and entered service in 1944. In 1948, the U.S. Air Force redesignated all A-26s as B-26s.
In 1958, Indonesia first encountered and shot down a B-26B. The aircraft belonged to the CIA, which was supporting local insurgents. Recognizing the bomber’s potential in the war against the insurgents, the Indonesian military ordered six units in 1959 as relations with the U.S. improved. By mid-1960, all six B-26Bs had been delivered and were being used to suppress the Permesta rebels. Subsequent combat operations involving the aircraft included Operation Trikora, the Konfrontasi from 1963 to 1966, and other battles against local insurgents. The aircraft remained in service until December 1977, making Indonesia the last operator of the B-26. Notably, the significantly more advanced Tu-16 was withdrawn from Indonesian service seven years earlier.
The Indonesian B-26B was introduced in Update 2.59 “Sky Odyssey” as a part of the Japanese aviation tree. It is a ground-attack aircraft with powerful fixed and external armament and a good rate of climb compared to other aircraft of its type. However, it is large and has poor maneuverability and only one gunner for defensive armament. This aircraft stands out due to its unusual armament, which includes Soviet bombs and new rockets.
