Description

The English Electric Lightning, a marvel of British engineering, stands as the UK's only all-British Mach 2 fighter aircraft. Developed during the Cold War, it was renowned for its exceptional rate of climb, powered by its twin Rolls-Royce Avon engines with afterburners. First flown in 1954, the Lightning was designed for quick interception, capable of reaching heights where few could venture. Its distinctive over-under engine configuration contributed to its unique silhouette and powerful performance. Despite its operational challenges, the Lightning remains a symbol of British aeronautical achievement.[1]
