Description

The AN/VPS-2 radar on the side of an M163's turret.

The AN/VPS-2 is an American ground based target tracking radar. In-game it is found as the only radar on the M163.

General info / usage

The AN/VPS-2 is only a tracking radar, this means it can lock onto targets and provide a firing lead indicator, but cannot detect targets and place them on the radar display. As the AN/VPS-2 is the only radar on the M163 this means that the M163 has no search capability, the player must go into their sight, place the crosshairs over a target and then lock on. Once locked on, the AN/VPS-2 can track a target through 360°, out to a maximum range of 7 km.

Msg-info.png In order to lock on you must be looking through your sight, position the crosshair over a target (within 7 km) and press the lock on key. The target must be within a 2° cone from the centre of the crosshair.

Comparison with analogues

Compared to other tracking radars the AN/VPS-2 has an poor maximum range of only 7 km (not as bad as the 3JB10), the minimum range is decent at only 100 m. The minimum relative speed is about average. Being able to track targets through 360 degrees once locked on is an advantage compared to other radars.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Can track targets through a full 360 degrees
  • Decent minimum range

Cons:

  • Poor maximum range
  • Requires use of scope to tock on to targets

History

The AN/VPS-2 is a small range-only radar developed in America. In reality the gunner of the vehicle would have to keep their scope over the target continuously; the radar would then feed ranging information into a computer which would then calculate the lead required to hit the target.
