The early prototypes were designed as medium tanks and the later ones as heavy tanks with 120 mm guns. The notable feature of the tanks was the use of an oscillating turret with an autoloader. Additionally, the SOMUA company developed a heavy tank to the same specifications as the AMX-50, called the [[Somua SM]].
