Description

GarageImage Bf 109 G-6.jpg

The Bf 109 G-6 is a Rank IV German fighter with a battle rating of 5.3 (AB) and 4.7 (RB/SB). It was in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.29.

The Bf 109 G-6 is, at stock, a difficult plane to fly, and needs the upgrades to even be considered an opponent for its adversaries. One upgraded however, it performs decent enough to even the playing field and allows an enjoyable experience.

This variant is played much like its predecessors, so stick to energy fighting. Because of its poor performance, it's imperative to keep you energy state high at all times.

Survivability and armour

  • 60 mm Bulletproof glass in front and rear of cockpit.
  • 4-8 mm Steel plates on pilot seat.
  • 10 mm Steel plates around pilot's head.
  • 21 mm Steel plate on rear of fuel tank, with 4 mm plates surrounding it on other sides.

Armaments

Offensive armament

The Bf 109 G-6 is armed with:

  • A choice between a 20 mm MG 151 or a 30 mm MK 108:
    • 1 x 20 mm MG 151 cannon (200 rpg = 200 total)
    • 1 x 30 mm MK 108 cannon (65 rpg = 65 total)
  • 2 x 13 mm MG 131 machine guns (300 rpg = 600 total)

The two machine guns are located just forward of the pilot firing out of the nose of the aircraft. The cannon (either 20 mm or 30 mm) are mounted in the propeller shaft and will fire through the propeller hub.

Suspended armament

Main articles: Bombs, Rockets

The Bf 109 G-6 external ordinance configurations can consist of:

  • Without load
  • 4 x 50 kg SC50JA bombs (200 kg total)
  • 1 x 250 kg SC250JA bomb (250 kg total)
  • 2 x 30 mm MK 108 cannon, wing-mounted (35 rpg = 70 total)
  • 2 x 20 mm MG 151 cannon, wing-mounted (135 rpg = 270 total)
  • 2 x 110 kg Wfr.Gr.21 rockets

Usage in the battles

When stock, you should side climb and enter combat with a superior altitude before engaging. Your enemies will render you ineffective if you don't have the height advantage. However, when it's fully upgraded you might omit side-climbing as the plane should generally get you either at the same altitude or above the opponent. WEP is very effective, so use it to get to an effective altitude in the least amount of time. The engine overheats quite fast, but it also cools down rapidly. Don't be afraid to use WEP if your temperature is yellow or red.

If you're engaging an enemy while you have an energy advantage, you should do everything in your power to keep or regain this advantage while depleting his. The Bf 109 can achieve this through the use of energy traps like rope-a-dopes, and to disengage when a foe avoids your boom. When neither you or the enemy has an advantage, you should avoid headons with the least amount of energy waste. Most of the time the enemy tries to get back on your 6 o clock, which drains his energy much more than yours. This gives you the opportunity to extend, climb, or bait him into an energy trap. Should you however face an enemy with superior altitude or speed, attempt to evade his booms on you or force him to overshoot.

When it comes to armament you have the choice of a 20 or 30 mm cannon in the engine, and gun pods of the same calibre. The 20 mm gun has good gun characteristics with decent damage and a good ammo count, while the 30 mm deals devastating damage but has a low ammo capacity and a very slow shell velocity. The gun pods aren't recommended as they dramatically decrease the plane's performance.

Specific enemies worth noting

Your worst enemies in the Bf-109 G-6 are the Spitfires and the P-47D/N/M Thunderbolts. The Spitfire can out-turn you at almost all altitudes below 4000 meters. You have to be really careful when engaging a P-47 with an Altitude advantage against you. the best thing you can do in that case is turn away and keep climbing if the thunderbolt dives on you turn into the head-on, fire a few rounds then use your superior roll rate to do a split-S. If a spitfire engages you DO NOT try to turn with it! if you try to you will have fallen into their trap, your best defense is similar to the tactics employed against the Thunderbolt, split-S and use your roll rate.

Counter-tactics

If you're faced against this plane, try to deplete its energy and force the plane either low or high. At higher altitudes the engine performance is poor at best, and at lower ones the plane loses energy quickly with no fast means to regain it. Avoid headons, as the enemy aircraft can potentially carry up to 3 x 30 mm guns.

As before mentioned, the Bf 109 G-6 performs badly in stock conditions with bad flight characteristics (essentially a brick with guns) and armament that is vastly inferior to most other fighters. This changes drastically with upgrades. The Upgrades are listed in the order in which they should be acquired.

  • 13 mm belts (for removing the tracers and getting an idea of where your cannon rounds land)
  • Radiator
  • Compressor
  • 20 mm belts (the stock belts are abhorrent with only 25% of glorious Minengeschosse)
  • Engine
  • 30 mm Modification (Do not equip them just now, the single 30 mm is a bit inconsistent)
  • 30 mm belts (for later use)
  • Engine Injection
  • Gunpods (depending on which you like more take the 30s or 20s, though generally, the 30s are more sensible since when engaging fighters gun pods are more of a hindrance and the 30s are very useful against bombers)

Afterward get all the Cannon and Machine gun upgrade and the remaining for better flight characteristics, bombs and rockets should be ignored until you researched everything else since they are not very useful.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Powerful nose-mounted armaments, very accurate
  • Can get a lot of kills with precision aiming
  • Has a researchable 30 mm cannon replacement for close-up approaches
  • Can research 2 types of gun pods for increased firepower
  • Can be equipped with 30 mm gunpods, with 3 x 30 mm 11.95 kg/s burst mass is insane at 4.7 BR
  • Very good energy retention
  • Very good rate of climb, better than the Bf 109 G-2 from patch 1.53 until now
  • Somewhat stable
  • Somewhat decent maneuverability at low speeds (for a Bf 109)
  • Pilot protection from the rear is good
  • Powerful engine
  • Feels a lot lighter than the Fw 190
  • Features the Stab.III/JG.52 camouflage, which considered to be one of the best and historically accurate camouflage for the 109

Cons:

  • Poor performance without flight performance upgrades
  • Is not really suited for new players
  • Still overheats, although not that often as the F model
  • Gunpods will reduce performance to some degree
  • MK 108 has low ammo count compared to the 20 mm
  • MK 108 is has a slow velocity, is very hard to lead
  • 13 mm machine guns create bulges in the nose, limiting visibility in the cockpit
  • 13 mm machine guns are underpowered

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too big, take it to a separate article, taking a link to an article about the vehicle and adding a block "/ historical reference" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/Name-vehicles/historical reference) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to include links to sources at the end of the article.

Media

An excellent addition to the article will be video guides, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.
