Rearview of the U.S. Mk.13/44 torpedo, highlighting the rear section which included the propellers, shroud ring and the frangible box stabilizer. The box stabilizer aided the torpedoes descent by causing the nose to point down at an angle to ensure the torpedo entered the water nose first, protecting the delicate motor and gyro mechanisms in the rear of the torpedo. The box stabilizer was held together with wooden pegs and the entire stabilizer disintegrated when the torpedo entered the water allowing the torpedo to cleanly continue onto the target.
