The Hawker Tempest Mk V was a British single-engine fighter aircraft from World War II. It was developed as an improved version of the Typhoon, another aircraft produced by Hawker. It featured a completely new, slimmer wing and a modified fuselage with an auxiliary fuel tank installed in front of the cockpit, between the engine and the oil system. To improve handling, a dorsal fin and a new, larger stabilizer were added. Plans were also made to re-engine the aircraft by replacing the old Napier Sabre 2 engine with a Bristol Centaurus engine (which was later installed on the Tempest Mk II). A backup variant was also created, the Tempest Mk V, which was powered by the Typhoon’s engine.
The Tempest Mk V was the first to enter production because it was the simplest to manufacture, thanks to its engine. The first combat units were equipped with Tempests in April 1944. As early as June 8, 1944, Tempests shot down four Bf 109 Gs in aerial combat and damaged two more Messerschmitts. However, the new fighter was soon assigned a different role: intercepting V-1 flying bombs. Of the 1,846 V-1s destroyed by aircraft, 638 were credited to Tempests. Once the threat from the new "weapon of retaliation" had significantly decreased, some of the fighters were sent to the front to carry out various tasks, such as providing cover for ground forces, conducting assault attacks on German convoys and fortified positions, and performing aerial patrols and reconnaissance.
The Tempest Mk V has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27. It is a purebred high-speed fighter with excellent straight-line and dive speed, as well as decent acceleration. While maneuverability using the ailerons allows you to outmaneuver some opponents, a gameplay strategy based on energy and speed is simpler and more reliable. Downsides include an unremarkable climb rate and heavy control inputs at speeds above 650 km/h, meaning you must fly the Tempest more cautiously.
