The T-44, the first model of it, emerged after two failed attempts to replace the T-34 with the T-43. The T-43 struggled due to efforts at standardization. Therefore, the new medium tank was designed entirely from scratch. To accommodate a centrally positioned turret and improved frontal armor, the engine compartment was reduced and the engine was placed transversely. By November 1943, the preliminary design was finished and caught the attention of the People’s Commissar of the Tank Industry and I.V. Stalin. The first prototype was built at the end of January 1944 and immediately sent for testing. During testing, issues with reliability and ergonomics were noted; however, the main problems were the driver’s compartment and the high turret ring, which significantly reduced protection. Nevertheless, the design showed great promise and was recommended for refinement. The resulting modifications gave the T-44 its final form. However, the first model of the T-44 did not survive.
The T-44 (FM) was added as a reward in Battle Pass Season XIX, "First Sample". Its gun has modest penetration values, so players must aim for vulnerable zones on most opponents. However, its large explosive charge often enables players to destroy any tank with a single shot. Its rate of fire is average, but the large initial ammunition load keeps it consistent for longer. The T-44 (FM)'s armor is most effective in motion, making it harder for enemies to target the driver’s compartment and turret ring. Thanks to its good mobility, the T-44 (FM) can maintain speed on any terrain, evading fire and attacking enemies from the flank. Thus compensating for its limited firepower and protection.
