In the mid-1970s, the M60A1 tank underwent a modernization program aimed at improving engine reliability. The upgraded tanks entered service with the U.S. Army in the late 1970s as the M60A1 (RISE). Several years later, the tanks were outfitted with additional equipment, including passive night vision devices for the gunner, commander, and driver, as well as smoke grenade launchers. In the late 1980s, they were fitted with the ERA to improve protection against chemical rounds. These upgrades resulted in the tank receiving the designation M60A1 RISE (P), with "RISE" standing for "Reliability Improved Selected Equipment" and "(P)" standing for "Passive". These vehicles have taken part in numerous modern conflicts and remain in service with many countries around the world.
The M60A1 RISE (P) had a long service life with both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps. Operation Desert Storm was the M60A1's last major battle. Serving with the 1st and 2nd Tank Battalions of the US Marine Corps, the tanks supported the advance into Kuwait. Despite its outdated design, the M60A1 proved to be a reliable and highly effective combat vehicle, destroying large numbers of Iraqi armored vehicles, including T-55s, Type 69s, and T-72Ms.
The M60A1 Predator was introduced in Update 2.57 "Heavy Cavalry". This version differs from the standard M60A1 RISE (P) by its appearance, inspired by US Army tanks that took part in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The vehicle is armed with a 105mm M68 gun and has a wide selection of ammunition, including HEATFS, HESH, and APFSDS rounds. Addition of its ERA armor still leaves the M60A1 vulnerable as most enemies already use APFSDS rounds.
