The 76 mm Gun Motor Carriage M18, Hellcat was an American tank destroyer used by the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. These new self-propelled guns were assigned to the 603rd, 704th, and 705th Tank Destroyer Battalions, all of which were part of General George S. Patton's 4th Armored Division of the 3rd Army. Hellcats first saw combat in Normandy during the Battle of Arracourt on September 19, 1944. In poor visibility conditions, American self-propelled guns destroyed German tanks at extremely close range.
The M18 Hellcats played a special role during the Battle of the Bulge. From December 19 to 20, 1944, near the town of Noville, northeast of Bastogne, four M18s from the 705th Battalion supported the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment's attack against the Wehrmacht's 2nd Panzer Division. At least 30 German tanks were destroyed during the battle through joint efforts, and enemy casualties ranged from 500 to 1,000 personnel. Following the Ardennes Offensive, delays in delivering M36s and the poor performance of M5 towed anti-tank guns led to the re-equipping of many American units with M18s. The number of M18 Hellcats in Europe increased from 146 in June 1944 to 540 in March 1945, with a total of 216 vehicles lost.
The Hellcat (Hell) was introduced in Update 2.47 "Leviathans". This self-propelled gun differs from the research tree version in several ways: it has add-on armor and a camouflage net; an information plate; and an additional 7.62 mm Browning machine gun. Such plates were often installed on new Hellcats sent to the Western Front to prevent Allied soldiers from confusing the M18 with a German tank.
In the game, the vehicle reflects American tank destroyer doctrine during World War II. Its mobility, combined with a powerful 76mm gun and APCBC shells, makes it ideal for flanking maneuvers and capturing key positions on the map. However, its weak armor and open turret roof leave the vehicle vulnerable to many threats.
