In June 1944, the U.S. military proposed modifying the LVT(A)(1) to include a turret from the M24 with a 75mm cannon. This would have significantly strengthened the LVT's with otherwise weak 37 mm guns or supplemented versions equipped with 75 mm howitzers, which had poor ballistics. However, the resulting vehicle with an extended turret ring was unstable when firing on water. By the end of the war, plans were in place to lower the hull and move the turret closer to the front. However, Japan's surrender brought an end to the program, though the experience gained was used in developing a version with a 76 mm gun.
The LVT(A)(1) (M24) was introduced in Update 2.51 "Spearhead". Unlike the version with a 37mm gun, this vehicle has a 75mm gun with slightly increased armor penetration and significantly post-penetration damage thanks to having APCBC rounds. The addition of a large-caliber machine gun is also a welcome feature. However, the tank's silhouette has become larger, its armor has not improved, and the reload time has increased.
