USS Charles F. Adams (DD-952/DDG-2) was the lead ship of a class of 29 guided-missile destroyers (DDG) built primarily for the United States Navy from 1958–1967. Based on the Forrest Sherman-class, the Adams-class were the USN's first purpose-built destroyers to be armed with guided missiles, in this case a Mk.11 missile launcher armed with a pair of RIM-24A Tartar SAMs.
As for the Charles F. Adams, she was laid down at the Bath Iron Works shipyard at Bath, Maine, on 16 June 1958, launched on 8 September 1959, and commissioned on 10 September 1960. During her 30-year service, Adams took part in recovery operations for the Mercury 8 mission and served as part of the quarantine forces around Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, before being decommissioned on 1 August 1990. After this, the ship was kept in storage at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Pennsylvania. Despite efforts by various organisations and city councils, attempts to acquire and preserve the ship failed, and the Charles F. Adams was finally sold for scrap in September 2020.
The USS Charles F. Adams was introduced in Update "Tusk Force" in her original 1961 configuration. Outwardly, the Adams is quite similar to the USS Mitscher, especially in her armament of two single rapid-fire 5-inch guns. However, the Adams' ace up her sleeve is a pair of RIM-24A Tartar SAMs at the stern. While designed as anti-air missiles, the Tartar's SACLOS guidance and large warhead size allowed them to be used as ad hoc anti-ship missiles against surface targets. With good aim, they could even detonate the magazines of enemy cruisers. However, the Adams' hull is very large and devoid of any armour. This, along with the downtime while guiding the missiles and the vulnerable missile racks located above the waterline, leaves her highly vulnerable to returning fire.
