Almost immediately after its adoption in the US Army in 1954, the M44 began to be delivered to the armies of NATO allies. The British Army received the M44 in the mid-1950s as part of the Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP). These units were considered a temporary solution to provide artillery units with mobile, self-propelled systems capable of effectively supporting highly manoeuvrable formations. Upon arrival in Great Britain, some vehicles were modernised: the standard American 155 mm howitzer was replaced by the British 105 mm L13 gun. This decision allowed ammunition to be unified with other systems in service with the country, which greatly simplified logistics. The modernised M44s were actively used by the British Army, including units stationed in continental Europe. By the mid-1960s, however, these SPGs began to be withdrawn from combat units. They were replaced by more modern self-propelled artillery systems designed specifically for British needs and were returned to the US in 1968.
Introduced in Update "Storm Warning", the M44 features a compact size, a powerful 155 mm cannon, and good mobility. Two types of shells are available for the gun: the M107 high-explosive shell and the M110 smoke shell. However, it is worth noting that the thin armour of the fighting compartment and hull, as well as the open-top turret, make the M44 easy prey for both armoured vehicles and aircraft. The horizontal gun traverse angles are limited to 30 degrees, which often requires turning the hull to aim at the target. In addition, the long reload time, characteristic of guns of this calibre, makes the vehicle more effective at range than close quarters.
