HMS Egret (L75) was the lead ship of a class of three sloops built for the Royal Navy in 1938. The Egret-class was an enlarged design of the preceding Bittern-class, intended to be used as low-tonnage, long-range escort ships with moderate anti-aircraft capability.
Egret was laid down at the J. Samuel White shipyard on the Isle of Wight on 21 September 1937, launched on 31 May 1938, and commissioned on 11 November that year. During the war, Egret primarily served as an escort around North Africa before being recalled in 1943 to perform anti-submarine duties in the Bay of Biscay. On 27 August 1943, Egret and her squadron were attacked by 18 Do 217 bombers armed with Hs 293 glide bombs off the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula, during which she was struck by a glide bomb and sunk, resulting in 198 deaths. The loss of Egret made her the first ship ever to be sunk by a guided munition.
Introduced in Update 2.57 "Heavy Cavalry", HMS Egret is a slow, moderately armed sloop with decent survivability. Although she lacks any hull armour, her spaced-out interior and compartments help lessen the damage from HE shells. However, Egret suffers from a lack of mobility and torpedo armament, both of which make her struggle to compete against more advanced destroyers or early cruisers.
