The Tu-95 is a Soviet long-range strategic bomber that was developed at the Tupolev Design Bureau in the early 1950s. It was developed from the experimental Tu-85, which had a good range but was effectively a dead end due to its piston engines not providing sufficient speed. For the new aircraft, a turboprop layout with NK-12 engines and coaxial propellers was chosen. The first prototype took to the air in November 1952, and after design flaws revealed during testing were corrected, the aircraft was accepted for serial production in 1955.
However, its development did not end there. In 1956, the aircraft was fitted with NK-12M engines and had its fuel capacity and airframe strengthened, improving range, reliability and stability when carrying heavy bomb loads. The first flight of the new modification, the Tu-95M, took place in 1957, and a total of 19 were built. Later, some of the earlier Tu-95 aircraft were upgraded to Tu-95M standard.
The Tu-95M was introduced as one of the rewards for the 2026 "Nuclear Thunder!" event. The aircraft stands out for its large bomb load, including its ability to carry heavy bombs. It also benefits from having RWR and countermeasures. However, its low speed and poor manoeuvrability make it vulnerable to jet fighters and anti-aircraft defences. Its defensive armament consists of 23 mm cannon turrets, which are ineffective against fast targets.
