The Panavia Tornado IDS is a multirole strike aircraft that was developed through a joint project between Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Development of this next-generation aircraft began in 1970, and the first Italian prototype made its maiden flight on December 5, 1975, in Turin. By the early 1980s, the aircraft had entered service with Italy and had quickly become the backbone of its strike aviation, replacing the outdated G.91. Italian Tornado IDS aircraft have participated in various international operations, including the 1991 Gulf War and NATO operations in the Balkans during the 1990s. Subsequently, Italy upgraded its Tornado IDS fleet with modern navigation, communication, and weapons systems. Despite the introduction of more advanced aircraft, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-35 Lightning II, the Tornado IDS continues to play an important role in the Italian Air Force, particularly in missions that require heavy armament and long range. Approximately 760 IDS aircraft were produced, some of which will remain in service until the mid-late-2020s.
The Italian Tornado IDS was introduced in Update 2.39 "Dance of Dragons". It is nearly identical to the German Tornado IDS WTD61, except for lacking its distinctive WTD61 center camouflage. It stands out among other aircraft for its high maximum speed, large load of 1,000-pound Mk. 83 bombs, decent main armament, and ballistic computer. However, the aircraft has several drawbacks. It is quite heavy, loses energy quickly in turns, lacks guided weapons, and has mediocre RWR and weak air-to-air armament, which prevents it from fully realizing its potential in aerial combat.
