The Tornado IDS SLE is a modification aimed at extending the service life of the Tornado IDS fighter-bombers. The German Tornado fleet has received several upgrade packages over the years. The first package, ASSTA1 (Avionics System Software Tornado in Ada), introduced the AS.34 Kormoran II anti-ship missile, the GBU-24 Paveway III and GBU-16 Paveway II guided bombs, and the Litening II targeting pod. Next came ASSTA2, which provided upgraded MFDs for the pilot and navigator, enhanced defensive avionics, and the capability to deploy cruise missiles. ASSTA3 added a Link 16 data link and GBU-54 LJDAM guided bombs. The final update in this series, ASSTA3.1, introduced improved MFDs for the navigator and a BOZ-101 electronic countermeasure pod.

The Tornado IDS SLE is one of the latest improvements to the German Tornado fleet, that followed after ASSTA upgrades. It was developed under the Service Life Enhancement (SLE) program, which was launched in 2021. Unlike the ASSTA series of upgrades (ASSTA 1–3.1), which focused on avionics and weapons systems, the SLE program aims to extend the operational life of each airframe. The program involves a complete overhaul of each aircraft, upgrades to defensive avionics, and integration of modern weapons. Many aircraft are currently undergoing the program and entering service with the Luftwaffe.

The Tornado IDS SLE was introduced in Update 2.51 "Spearhead". Compared to its predecessor, the SLE has a significantly expanded arsenal, including a new LITENING III targeting pod, Brimstone laser-guided missiles, and HOSBO guided bombs with infrared guidance. The aircraft also has countermeasure pods for protection. However, it remains a heavy fighter-bomber incapable of engaging in air-to-air combat with dedicated fighters.
