The Stridsvagn 122B PLSS (short for "Panoramic Low-Signature Sight") is a modernized version of the Strv 122B, a Swedish main battle tank. In 2006, at the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris, the Swedish company Saab Systems demonstrated a prototype of a remotely controlled combat module with a PLSS. The PLSS was designed primarily to provide tank commanders with better situational awareness. The Swedish Army signed a contract with Saab Systems to install these systems on Strv 122 tanks and conduct further testing. The equipment was mounted on a telescopic mast on the turret, replacing the commander’s sight. The electronics, target tracking device, and control panel were located inside the vehicle. A Strv 122 prototype with the PLSS RWS combat module underwent testing from 2005 to 2006, but the project was subsequently abandoned.
The Strv 122B PLSS was introduced in Update 2.1 "New Power". The main difference between the Strv 122A and the Strv 122B is the commander’s retractable periscopic sight with a second-generation thermal imager. This sight can be raised slightly for better battlefield visibility. Otherwise, it is essentially a heavier Leopard 2 due to the installation of additional composite armor plates. Its drawbacks include its still-vulnerable gun mantlet and turret ring. However, these areas are relatively small, making them difficult targets for the enemy.
