By 1941, Italy was deeply involved in World War II, and its air force was quickly becoming outdated. While liquid-cooled inline engines were gaining widespread popularity across Europe, the Italian aviation industry relied primarily on air-cooled radial engines. Recognizing this shift, Reggiane decided to design a new aircraft from scratch. On May 9, 1942, the first prototype of the future Re.2005 fighter, powered by a DB605A engine, took to the skies. An order for 750 aircraft soon followed. However, by the end of the war, only 48 production models and two prototypes had been built.
The second prototype (MM.495) made its maiden flight in late October 1942 with a standard engine and propeller. It underwent testing in Guidonia. There, in March 1943, it was refitted with a German VDM propeller. On April 12, it received a German DB605AM engine. In this configuration, it made its first flight on June 10 under German supervision. It later underwent testing at the Rechlin airfield. After that, little is known about the MM.495.
The Re.2005 (VDM) was introduced as one of the rewards for the Battle Pass: Season XXI, "Brave Archer". The VDM differs from the Re.2005 serie 0 in that it has a more powerful engine. Otherwise, it is the same fighter with good offensive and suspended armament, a decent top speed, and excellent maneuverability. Although, it can struggle against some faster jets.
