The Lockheed P-38G Lightning was an American twin-engine piston fighter from World War II. It remains the most produced aircraft built with a twin-boom configuration. The XP-38G prototype and its production counterpart, the P-38G, were further developments of the earlier E and F variants. Several design improvements and refinements were introduced, including a strengthened center wing section and the ability to carry external fuel tanks. However, the most significant change was the installation of more powerful engines, which began a trend of increasing engine power that continued throughout the Lightning’s development. Deliveries to the U.S. Army Air Forces began in June 1942, and a total of 1,082 P-38G aircraft were built.
The XP-38G has been in the game since the beginning of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27. Despite its increased power compared to the E variant, the XP-38G is still very much a Lightning and is best flown while preserving speed and energy. Already quite fast at low altitudes, it loses less performance at higher altitudes than many of its opponents, making it particularly effective at the start of battles above 5,000 meters. In certain situations, it can engage single-engine and twin-engine fighters in dogfights, though doing so requires careful use of its combat flaps. The only difference between the XP-38G and the P-38G-1 in the game is its appearance. Pre-production aircraft were left unpainted and retained the natural polished aluminum finish.
