The Baleno MC-492 is an Italian gunboat and the second boat in the Lampo class. In the late 1950s, the Italian Navy became interested in creating an gunboat with a mixed power plant, consisting of one diesel engine and one gas turbine engine. Additionally, the armament was supposed to be quickly convertible. On May 4, 1958, the future boat was designated MC-491. It was launched on November 22, 1960, in Taranto. After trials that continued until 1963, it was commissioned. The second boat, designated MC-492, was commissioned on July 16, 1965. On September 1, MC-491 was renamed Lampo and MC-492 was renamed Baleno. They retained their old designations, P 491 and P 492, only to comply with NATO standards.
Thanks to their combined diesel-gas turbine power plant, the boats were impressively fast, and their flexible weaponry allowed them to be converted into fast minelayers or equipped with a combined installation of two 40 mm Bofors guns and one 105mm rocket launcher. They could also be equipped with a single 40 mm autocannon and a number of torpedoes. In practice, however, both boats were equipped with three 40 mm Bofors guns, which were effective against both ships and low-flying aircraft. Both boats remained in service until 1983 and were scrapped in 1985.
The Baleno MC-492 was introduced in Update 2.49 "Tusk Force". This Italian boat stands out thanks to its powerful 40mm autocannon and decent speed. However, its torpedoes are extremely weak, and its single 40mm gun is often knocked out by enemy fire.
