General information

At the beginning of the 1930s, the Freccia-class destroyers were becoming inefficient, so the Regia Marina began searching for a new type of destroyer. The Maestrale-class project was chosen, which had a stronger hull and better balance to roll less than the Freccia-class. Despite this, armaments did not vary much initially and they had similar characteristics. Eventually, four units were built.

RN Grecale was laid down on 25 September 1931 and launched on 17 May 1934 by C.R.D.A. Shipyards of Ancona. Delivered to the Regia Marina on 15 November 1934, she was the third ship of the Maestrale class. In 1936, she participated in various military missions in Spain. From 1940 to 1941, she was mainly used as an escort ship, participating in the Second Battle of Sirte, the Battle of Mezzo Agosto and various Allied operations. After World War II, RN Grecale was used for training purposes until 31 May 1964 when she was decommissioned.

Introduced in Update "Hornet's Sting", RN Grecale has a main armament of four 120 mm guns, and adequate speed and manoeuvrability. Her 1949 configuration provides an upgraded AA armament composed of six 37 mm guns with HE-TF ammunition – this ammo can be effective against coastal ships – and two 20 mm guns, but trades this for only three torpedo launchers instead of six and a lack depth charges.
