The Centauro II is a significant upgrade to the Italian Centauro B1 wheeled tank destroyer. Development of the Centauro II began in 2011 in response to shortcomings identified in the previous model under the conditions of modern warfare and asymmetric conflicts. The primary reasons for developing the new vehicle were the outdated electronic architecture of the original Centauro and its incompatibility with the SICCONA network-centric command and control system, as well as the insufficient level of protection identified during operations in Iraq, Kosovo, and Somalia. The new model features a redesigned V-shaped hull for enhanced protection against mines and improvised explosive devices, an isolated fuel and ammunition compartment layout, and a modern optics and electronic suite. Its primary armament is a 120-mm smoothbore gun with an automatic loader housed in a new turret with improved armor and an ammunition compartment that is isolated from the crew. The first prototype was unveiled in 2016. As of 2026, 11 pre-production vehicles have been built to test and refine the final configuration of future models.
The Centauro II (P) was introduced in Update 2.55 "Ninth Wave". It is a fast, agile tank destroyer equipped with a powerful 120mm gun, an automatic loader, effective APFSDS rounds, a high-quality thermal imager, and LWS. However, the Centauro pays for these advantages with having weak armor, large dimensions, and awkward turret placement.
