The Hawker Hurricane was a British fighter aircraft developed during the interwar period. Based on the Hawker Fury biplane, the Hurricane marked a significant departure from its predecessor, notably with the retractable undercarriage and the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. After making its first flight on 6 November 1935, the Hurricane proved superior to any existing biplane design and entered service in 1937. The Hurricane, along with its would-be successor, the Supermarine Spitfire, became the backbone of the RAF from the start of the Battle of Britain in June 1940, with the Hurricane credited for inflicting 60% of the losses suffered by the Luftwaffe. Although the Hurricane's performance was considered adequate during the early stage of the war, the plane's fabric-covered fuselage significantly limited its performance and potential for improvement compared to the all-metal Spitfire, resulting in the Hurricane being gradually relegated to the ground attack role. Nevertheless, due to the aforementioned simple construction, the Hurricane proved to be a valuable asset for the war effort. In total, 14,487 Hurricanes of all variants were built.
The Hurricane Mk I/L was a revised design of the Hurricane Mk I, the first production variant of the Hurricane. Compared to the original design, the Mk I/L featured a three-bladed metal propeller, metal-covered wings, as well as the addition of armour in the cockpit and self-sealing fuel tanks. In total, around 500 of the late Mk I variants were built before being phased out by the Mk II.
The Hurricane Mk I/L has been in the game since the start of the Open Beta Test prior to Update 1.27. While not as agile or fast as its Spitfire brethren, the Hurricane is a well-rounded fighter. The plane is capable of keeping up with most fighters, while also being able to take hits from low-calibre guns. However, the Hurricane's energy retention is mediocre, which may leave it vulnerable at low speeds.
